1. A "Separated" Green Zone must be a MINIMUM of 6'6" from the nearest line open to traffic, regardless of train speed.
2. This means that the worksite must stop short of the "Six Foot" rail on a blocked line if the adjacent line is open. The only exception would be where there is a wide "Six Foot" space greater than 6'6".
3. A site Warden must be appointed for all "Separated" Green Zones. Their purpose is to watch PEOPLE and give a warning if they stray close to, or beyond, the limits of the work site. Although it is human nature to tell colleagues if they are aware a train is approaching, this is not the purpose of the role.
4. Lookout protection is to provide a work group with warning that a train is approaching, in sufficient time for them to reach a position of safety at least 10 seconds before the train arrives. It can only be used in darkness where the line speed is, or has been reduced to, 20mph or less.
5. Carrying heavy tools or material across an open line is classified as WORK and protection arrangements must take this into account.
