The Inspection of Dissimilar Metal Joints – November 2010

In July 2007 Applied Inspection were invited by TWI (The Welding Institute) to take part in a research project involving the use of phased array technology in the inspection of joints welded using dissimilar metals.

The project has two primary aims:

1. position and size defects accurately
2. improve the overall inspection quality through the use of phased array technology

Applied Inspection work alongside project partners – British Energy plc, Alba Ultrasound, Peak NDT, Shell UK and the Health & Safety Executive and will assist in delivering a revolutionary new technique for the inspection of dissimilar joints using an innovative model based approach to compensating for metallurgical barriers and two advanced phased array probe types using novel materials and concepts.

The project is due to conclude in December 2010. To learn more about this project follow the link –
